DRAMAMINE Dimenhydrinate – Motion Sickness Relief – Side Effects

What is Dramamine?

Motion sickness medication Dramamine was approved by the FDA in 1949. It is currently marketed by Prestige Brands Holdings, Inc. Motion sickness affects millions of people who find themselves in environments that disturb the delicate balance found within the human inner ear. When you are on a boat, or travelling for long distances or have to stand or sit on an unsteady surface for long periods of time, you may feel dizzy, unstable or nauseous. You are getting nauseous because your brain is confused as signals sent by the tubes in your inner ears conflict with other type of signals sent by other parts of your body. For instance, while on a boat your inner ear tubes detect that your body is moving (i.e. waves) while your eyes “see” that you are sitting still (you are sitting and not moving your body).

How Does Dramamine Work?

Dramamine is sold as a generic chewable tablet in different countries under names such as Driminate, Gravol, Vomex, Anautin, Amosit and Aviomarin. The main active ingredient in this drug is Dimenhydrinate which affects the area of the brain responsible for vomiting, as well as structures located in the inner ear that control balance. In essence, the medication blocks signals coming from these parts of the body, effectively reducing or eliminating uncomfortable feelings of nausea and being off balance. It also has the potential to be a nervous system depressant which may lead to sleepiness or drowsiness.

Dramamine Dimenhydrinate Dosage

For adults, take 50 to 100mg of Dramamine 4 to 6 hours or as needed, and 15 to 25mg for children aged 2 to 6 every 6 to 8 hours. This medication should not be given to children under the age of 1. Given the difficulties encountered by some people when swallowing Dramamine tablets, consider asking for chewables to help this medication go down without a hitch.
